    Hej, Adam,

I’ll drive your N800. Where does it want to go? :-)

    Hi Adam,

Looks like you are advancing nicely in the N800 area.

Well you where talking about you needing to get a deal with nokia, too late for me now i just got a N800 delivered here today :) Sure is slick!

Use my gmail address if you want to try some googletalk stuff.

    All the best,

    Tj

The Candyman is on the case… Using Gizmo and GTalk to connect to GTown, I already explained to Adam that out-of-the-box the N800 supports only USB slave / mass storage device mode, so no USB host mode.

Nevertheless, I am looking into this.

In case somebody else finds a solution quicker, then I am sure that would be appreciated too!

Do you have a S/N or a FCC ref? It could be easier to us if you post the actual name of the drivers under windows or mac.

A contact of mine got the Vodafone USB modem working under Linux, after some tweaking. However, because the N800 only appears to support slave mode, I doubt I could provide any useful information. You’d probably want to talk to Nokia about it.

ok, rus on linux, 30% there :)
Loek confirmed the slave mode, so it appears this would be a pretty daughnting task afterall.
Any ideas if the sim card that is provided with the USB modem will deliver the same performance if used on a mobile phone with the bluetooth connection?

The N800 supports Bluetooth 2.0 which goes up to 2.1 Mbps.

Regular 3G goes up to 384 kbps, and HSDPA goes up to 3.6 Mbps. You would need to check if the place where you are going has regular 3G or HSDPA, and whether the roaming agreement with Vodafone supports HSDPA (I guess it usually does)..

To get the HSDPA speeds, both the network and the USB modem / phone have to support it, and you need to be in a loccation where the signal strength is large enough to actual get the speeds. Also with regular 3G you can experience lower speeds than 384 kbps, if the signal strength is not sufficient. Simple physics, you know!

I would wager that the Bluetooth link will not be the limiting factor…

384kbps is a theoretical maximum for 3G, just as HSPDA has a theoretical maximum of 3.6mbps. As the old saying goes, “in theory, theory and practise are the same; in practise they aren’t.” In my experience, I get 225-250kbps on 3G (Nokia E61). I haven’t yet used HSDPA, though. Cheers!
