I received an email from Podcast Paul apologising for his attitude towards me in recent online (and offline) conversations. I told him I wasn’t aware of it, or perhaps have become immune to it.
I receive lots of similar emails and I usually reply the same way; “thank you, but why didn’t you apologise publicly?” Paul aknowleged and said he would.
Then I went looking for whatever he had said, I didn’t have to look very far, yesterday he posted this piece that he had to ‘get off his chest’.
Phew, ok, I’m glad he did unload, keeping that shit locked up inside can give you heart trouble, or worse.
Seems alot of the focus of his frustrations are about recognition and monetisation. A few words about these topics:
As we start to change the media landscape (that includes upgrading advertising) many people will become celebrities. You don’t need a huge audience to be treated like a celebrity. In fact you don’t even have to have a weblog or podcast to know what celebrity is like. Be a star player on your school’s team or class president and you’ll witness the downside of celbrity; rumour, gossip, untruths, speculation, agression.
These of course come on the heels of admiration, celebration, love, firendship and recognition.
Celebrity always follows a sine-wave curve. You get built up, then torn down, then built up again. I’ve been in the public eye for over half my life and have learned to ride this rollercoaster. There’s no logic as to why this happens, but it does, and you can almost predict it, if you are on the wave long enough.
This is nothing new, and unlikely to change. In many ways, it used to be worse, because you had no other outlet to communicate your personality to the world than through mainstfream media. Today we have weblogs, which I don’t like as much as podcasts, because the written word, when used by a novice (such as myself) can be ripped apart and mashed up out of its original context.
Recognition for a celebrity’s artistic or creative work is very hard to find in mainstream media. Of the 50 or so annual honorees at the Academy Awards, how many extras, sound and lighting engineers, admins, assistants, wardrobe, props, gaffers etc do not get to share the limelight with the stars? Each one of them is also needed to make a great picture. How many big name actors bring in millions at the box office, yet never win an award because their work isn’t at the intellectual level of straight guys playing gay cowboys? You get the idea. In any media industry only a few get the credit they deserve. That’s why there are so many award shows, usually each new one is organized by a group who feels that are properly recognized for their efforts.
And even if they have been highly recognized for their work, like Madonna, who has won a wall of industry awards, they can’t buy a kind word in the tabloids. It’s been pretty negative on this current downtrend of Madonna’s sine-wave.
Which is exactly why I like monetising artistic and creative work: No matter what happens, you learn to soothe the pain by looking at the check. That’s why celebrities get paid so much, it keeps ‘em happy. Happy actors are happy to promote their movies which makes the people who pay them so much, happy. It’s a trade-off, very similar to prostitution. I read once that the word ‘actress’ stems from a term used to describe prostitutes in old Venice.
Ofcourse money doesn’t buy happiness, and after you’ve had all the cars, boats, bling and houses you can purchase and still have money left over, you might be lucky enough to get to the place where I’m at right now.
It’s a beautiful place, where money does not motivate, only the health and sanity of your loved ones, and pride and passion in my art. And for that realisation, I thank Podcast Paul, for he reminded me where I am on my wave, and just how much fun I’m having riding it out with all of you.
Adam, Great post! Thanks for sharing that perspective with us. As you describe what it all comes down to, the best things in life are free. With all the distractions out there one has to learn to appreciate lifes simple pleasures.
Right on Paul! I love being a Registered Nurse in the State of Pennslyvania and don’t need to be told to Quit My Day Job. I believe you were referring to the PME last November. I went to PME with Andrew from exit50.com solely as a podcast listener and came away with the desire to start my own videopodcast for the love of it. And yes I still listen to Adam as long as my thumb is on the scroll wheel!
I know Paul reasonably well and my understanding of the situation is that he wrote the piece out of frustration with the current mind set. There is a huge amount of face to face discussion in the UK about how podcasting will develop. It really is a hotbed at the moment. I would like to see this become a public discussion of all the possibilities, and not just on the DSC.
So get it out there already! Is it what Paul covered? Is there more? What are the core issues? Where’s the outrage in PUM or podcasts? C’mon boys, lets get cracking!
If i get it right Podcast Paul has stopped listening to the Charlie because he couldn’t stand the enormous time taken by the Earthlink commercial and he is into Podcasting because he wants to do this as a hobby. He doesn’t want to listen to adverts on Podcasts,it reminds him of old school radio. The way i see it,in the near future there will be 3 categories of podcasts. 1: Podcast Paul category (with or without a paypall button !) 2. Podcasts who do play adverts and are freely accessable. 3. The “you have to pay first to be able to listen to” Podcast
I hardly ever listen to conventional radio because of those annoying screaming messages one once called commercials. Therefore if the quality is right i am willing to subscribe and pay for the time people make me smile while commuting.
I posted this to Paul’s comments, and thought I’d put it here too:
Jeez. Does QYDJ require you to quit your day job? No. I think the idea always has been that there will be some people who will get to a level that they could, if they so desired, quit their job and podcast fulltime for a reasonable paycheck. They just as easily could just look at it as an opportunity to makes some extra money, maybe even double their income (if it truly came up to the QYDJ level). Why is that bad?
I’m happy that you love what you do, and you have invested much time and effort honing your skills. But that’s not true of everyone (like the aforementioned poo-poker). I for one used to have a job I loved…it was called Radio DJ and Production director. Unfortunately, the direction that business has taken made it less fun, and pay less (except to the chosen few Sterns of the world) than other endeavors. So I quit and got a “real” job. Unfortunately, the “real” job has no creative outlet, there’s no sense of accomplishment, I get no buzz from selling shit (some do, and if that’s your gig and you enjoy it, great. I do not). Podcasting allows me that creative outlet that I used to get at my low-paying smaller market radio jobs (my biggest market was Denver, which is number 23 or so).
I don’t fault anyone for wanting to do something creative and fun and have it pay the bills. Who wouldn’t want that? If it can happen, I’m all for it. And it doesn’t mean Podcasting will turn into commercial radio. Although commercial radio, I’m sure, would like it to, and is doing it’s best to crowd original programming down off the page on iTunes.
Pip, both yo and Paul are missing a 4th category, one where there is a new form of advertising. It is happening already.
Adam, I take your point about “lets get cracking” I think there is a place for a podcast which concentrates on the state of podcasting and generally kicking ideas around. Thanks for the idea. If I can find a group of regular contibutors, would you come on every once in a while?
Pip, you have some interesting thoughts on the categories of podcast. Would you be willing to write a piece on the subject for Podcast User? If so, please mail me at paul dot pinfield at podcastusermagazine dot com
As promised… within about 5 mins of email with Adam I did exactly what I said I would… on my blog at http://www.podcastpaul.com
Good to get stuff off your chest properly!
why you people are so naive?
that’s right that AdamC’s wife and daughter live in UK, but AdamC totally disrespects both UK and EU: all employees of Podshow Inc are in USA, all investors are in USA and the only reason why AdamC’s wife and daughter live in UK is because from UK the Netherlands is close… so naturally AdamC disrespects also British podcasting events, but goes to all American one.
AdamC: if you are too disrespectful to go to British podcasting events and to support pro-actively British podcasting then fuck-off from UK and from EU to USA!
Just fuck off!
PS. I am not gay.
PPS. I love advertising in podcasts – I was also the first in history person, who paid cash for placing advertisements in podcasts.
Podcast Paul really did mention a lot of things that we’ve all been thinking for the past few months, glad he got the message through.
Adam, you should come and join us at the next meetup in London or even venture up to Birmingham. We’ve all said very recently how much we’d like to sit down with you, have a few pints and talk about podcasting – especially throw some of the ideas at you that we have on developing it further – not necessarily all going down the advertising route…
I’d be reluctant to think that for the UK podcast community to be successful (i.e. have listeners, have opinions, be respected etc ) we need Podshow or anything else North American.
Podcast User Magazine and PodcastCon UK 05 prove that the British can do it first without help.
Hmm, several prominent members of the UK podcast community seem to disagree.
But really Mark, are you turning this into a US/UK thing? That’s a dissapointment.
they feel that the UK needs the US for podcasting to work here, to be a success? I’m pretty sure they don’t, my comment just reflects several conversations with prominent members of the UK podcast community in the past few months.
As for it being a disappointment, well, have we to get it off our chests or not?
Blimey – CSB, you really should just get off that fence once in a while…
Phew.
There really is room for everyone in podcasting though isn’t there? It’s true that stuff shouldn’t generate around the centre of one place, I see us all as Venn Diagrams where the circles should eclipse and touch each other … in a nice way.
I imagine that folks in the Galapogos Isles, Venezuala and Fiji might feel left out too.
But,seriously, everyone is starting to talk about podcasting and now is the time surely to share and compliment each other – for the common good if you will.
Sheesh, this is good fun – I’m just waiting for Jeremy Paxman to wade in, in his true Newsnight style.
Actually, here’s the thought – isn’t this the passion and stuff you mentioned Adam? This is great!
Paul Nicholls (podcastpaul) : AdamC’s girls live in UK so he should pay back to UK, and at least respect British podcasting community by going to British events – also those non-MSM! BTW: can I hire you, Paul, as a lawyer to sue AdamC?
I’m one of the many Brits posting here, I am however living in Canada and not the UK. Here podcasting is still very much in it’s infancy. It’s not surprising when the talk is always of the UK and the US, that puts a lot of potential listeners off, from neither country. Podcasting should be global and it still has a long way to go for that to happen. Let’s just get the listeners interested. Then they will come.

Canada produces some of the finest podcasts out there. But who actually cares where the host of the podcast lives? Isn’t the beauty of this medium its global reach?
lol@CSB trying to hire Paul.
“I imagine that folks in the Galapogos Isles, Venezuala and Fiji might feel left out too.” — but AdamC’s girls live in UK and not in in the Galapogos Isles, Venezuala or fucking Fuji…
CSB – thanks mate, but I’m a bit busy, at any rate I think Adam would win!
These word maybe a bit strong, but that whole discussion about what podcasting is and should be plus the hole story with adams lawsuit makes me think of an old Oliver Stone Movie “Talk Radio” – check out what Barry Champlain had to say live on air :
” I’m here, I’m here every night, I come up here every night. This is my job, this is what I do for a living. I come up here and I do the best I can. I give you the best I can. I can’t do better than this. I can’t. I’m only a human being up here. I’m not God,…uh,…a lot of you out there are not…
I may not be the most popular guy in the world. That’s not the point. I really don’t care what you think of me. I mean, Who the hell are you anyways? You…”audience”…You call me up and you try to tell me things about myself…You don’t know me. You don’t know anything about me. You’ve never seen me. …You don’t know who I am, what I want, what I like, what I don’t like in this world. I’m just a voice. A voice in the wilderness…
And you…like a pack of baying wolves descend on me, ’cause you can’t stand facing what it is you are and what you’ve made. can’t stand facing what it is you are and what you’ve made….Yes, the world is a terrible place! Yes, cancer and garbage disposals will get you! Yes, a war is coming. Yes, the world is shot to hell and you’re all goners… Everything’s screwed up and you like it that way, don’t you? You’re fascinated by the gory details… You’re mesmerized by your own fear! You revel in floods and car accidents and unstoppable diseases…You’re happiest when others are in pain! And that’s where I come in, isn’t it?…
I’m here to lead you by the hand through the dark forest of your own hatred and anger and humiliation…I’m providing a public service! You’re so scared! You’re like the little child under the covers. You’re afraid of the boogeyman, but you can’t live without him. Your fear, your own lives have become your entertainment! Tomorrow night, millions of people are going to be listening to this show, and you have nothing to talk about!
Marvelous technology is at our disposal and instead of reaching up for new heights, we try to see how far down we can go…how deep into the muck we can immerse ourselves! What do you wanna talk about? Baseball scores? Your pet? Orgasms? You’re pathetic. I despise each and every one of you…You’ve got nothing. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. No brains. No power. No future. No hope. No God. The only thing you believe in is me.
What are you if you don’t have me? I’m not afraid, see. I come up here every night and make my case, I make my point…I say what I believe in. I have to, I have no choice, you frighten me! I come up here every night and I tear into you, I abuse you, I insult you…and you just keep calling. Why do you keep coming back, what’s wrong with you? I don’t want to hear any more, I’ve had enough.
Stop talking. Don’t call anymore! Go away! Bunch of yellow-bellied, spineless, bigoted, quivering, drunken, insomnatic, paranoid, disgusitng, perverted, voyeuristic little obscene phone callers. That’s what you are. Well, to hell with ya…I don’t need your fear and your stupidity. You don’t get it. ..It’s wasted on you. Pearls before swine.. If one person out there had any idea what I’m talking about..”
As I said big words but I guess you get the idea….
Yeah, but didn’t he get shot in the parking lot outside his studio?
Mark, that’s what I mean. There’s some excellent podcasts from the UK, US, CANADA, etc, but ask the average person on the street “What’s a podcast?” and they look at you blankly. I think it’s far too early to consider slicing up markets geographically until there’s a substantial market to slice up. Podcasting is going to be huge, but until that point, monetizing (sorry Paul) has to sit on the back burner, I have no problem though paying for podcasts, as long as the amount is realistic.
I like the fact that Ricky Gervais is also offering the show on iTunes as well as Audible, but general concensus is, it’s far too expensive. Now if he had the balls to offer it at 49cents or even lower, I wonder how many of those 200,000 would then pay. Until that time comes, I’m staying away.
Oh my god I’m on a rant. What was the subject again? LOL
Colin – Indie Launchpad

I prefer Robimn Williams portrayal of the effervescent half glass full bloke….
‘Gooooooooooooood Morrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrning Vieeeeeeeeeeeeeetnaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmm’.
I think I’d have switched Barry Champlain’s rant off at the first p[aragraph to listen to some Van Halen..actually, that’s a thought – I haven’t listened to some good vintage VH in ages (their first album is absolutely essential). Like podsafe music is now before the music went too commercial.
That ‘off button’ is a powerful thing too you know.
As a simple guy with no interest in podcast politics, a non-listener to Mr Curry’s shows and an avid avioder of Itunes I can only express myself in these simple terms. Mr Curry has with the use of his pod status created a kingdom of his design, being able to pick and chose who or what he graces favour apon, it is clear that the United Kingdom is not on speaking terms with the doorman.
He is not alone of course, our very own BBC pays little attention to the grass roots of podcasting, in fact almost all of the BBC’s podcasts are just edited highlights of the Radio shows created by the sound engineers, I doubt that Chris Moyles would even know where to start.
So where is all this leading to I wonder, to be honest I don’t have a clue but I’m not in the mood to kiss bottom to get in anyones favour. Lets hope that as podcasting reaches the earplugs of the people on the street thay are able to roam rather than be lead!
No disrespect to Mr Curry is intended, this is my personal point of view and not reflective of podcastusermagazine.com for whom I am a co founder. so how about a pint down Guilford way Mr Curry, I’ll bring roger. he’s not free on tuesdays.
Jimmy: you wrote “it is clear that the United Kingdom is not on speaking terms with the doorman” but for the fuck’s sake this fucking dorman = AdamC = has his both girls living in UK so he should feel obliged more to UK for fuck’s sake, meaning: supporting also indie podcasting (by going to meetings and giving accounts without traffic limits at PDN to Brits) and not just MSM (MainStreamMedia, like this fucking communistic TheGuardian). So my point is simple: either AdamC will start supporting British podcasting or he should fuck off from UK to USA and stop pretending that he cares about UK at all!
mark – tartanpodcast.com : hiya kilt carrier! do you know Ewan Spence – another kilt carrier?
paul nicholls (podcastpaul): pity that you’re not interested – if you would change your mind, then contact me per email!
AdamC: maybe once in a while you could think about helping out also other groups than: a) your girls, b) your whores from Podshow Inc, c) your brownnosers who keep their tounges in your anus constantly d) your master Ron Bloom, whose slave you are, e) your investors
… like for example: a) Brits [because your girls live in UK], b) EU because thanks to EU citizenship you can live legally in UK, c) authors of books that don’t brownnose you but just spread podcating meme, d) other podcasters, who just want to have fun (and don’t mind advertising), e) mankind.
@ colin. Mr. sixpack is not interested in podcasting about International taxation, but he will be if the content of his newly bought
MP-3 player gives him information about his favourite football club.
How much is this person willing to pay on a monthly basis? about a sixpack worth? ($ 5,-) I presume Mr. taxlawyer is able to pay much more if he can benefit and deduct the costst as corporate.
The general audience will grosso modo be much larger in case of the footballclub and generate more money in the process.
Ergo, there is indeed a market for podcasting once the general public gets the hang of it,people need to be informed about it and in my opinion the Podfather is the man for the mission.
CSB: I’ve worn a kilt a couple of times (liberating experience; highly recommended), but my full extent of carrying a kilt was probably taking it to and from the hire shop.
As for Ewan, he’s become a good podcasting buddy, even if he does hail from Edinburgh…Oh look, I’m making it a Glasgow/Edinburgh thing now… ;-P
mark – tartanpodcast.com : no thanks, I am afraid to wear kilt: I am afraid that I will catch the gay. Damn it, speaking of Scotland: I am drooling to get some haggis … I love it!
I have to agree that “source geography” — the place of origin of the podcast — seems to be surprisingly low on the list of things about which listeners care.
I started the TravelCommons podcast in May 2005 about my travel experiences which have been, with the exception of a 2-week European holiday, in the US. Yet as my listener base has grown, it has also internationalized. Some of the listeners who most frequently comment are from the UK and the Netherlands, and looking at my server logs, I have regular listeners around the world.
If our listeners don’t differentiate between podcasters who sit in US, UK, Canada, etc., then I don’t think we should either. I think it’s fine to be proud of what are local friends are doing without being parochial about it, without turning it into an “us vs. them” contest — be it the US vs. the UK, or Chicago vs. San Francisco. Instead, let’s all have a group hug and then get back to creating great content that will be loved the world over (cue a clip from the old Coke commercial “I’d Like To Teach the World To Sing…”)
“The Gay”??? MOTHERFUCK YOU.
it id good
Co-ordinates are very important to me ! I am 69 years old have travelled a lot ! I am interested in travel tips for example he mentioned the Amstel Hotel ! Great Hotel Old World Europe ! It is a shame that Adam has so many critics ! Also ,Travel experts don’t exist ! I hope Mr.Curry discloses location on every cast ! Tells us where he eats, what he sees etc ! Cause then I do not have to book mark my bowser with Travel Web Sites with fifty adds for flee bags !
Hey, this is a great episode. Really great music and the talk is funny and helped me get through a really boring hour in the airport. Keep up the great work and try to have some more shows with Jasper, they are really rockin’ and very funny.
