Posted on Tuesday 27 October 2009

Of concern, to say the least comes this report from Reuters:

Private Internet providers might need government authorization to block popular websites, [...] to reduce residential transmission speeds to make way for commerce.

Where does this weird, unexplained focus on stock exchange in the original article come from? Other people’s work is unimportant or what?

Yet another reason why they wish they could put all of the adult content in its own top level domain. It would make it so much easier to block those sites in order to “save the bits”.

    Quite concerning regardless.

this actually makes sence to me. if there is an emergency this would be a way of allertting the masses. the internet is becoming a place where everbody lives. There is already a system in place for radio and television. It only seems logical. how it is enforced wont be easy.

“we interupt this this web page for and emergancy webcast”

Uh, What about all of the teleworkers? Isn’t that considered “commerce”? Or all of the Emergency Services providers that use 3G and VPNs to access Mission Critical Data. Or to Do Video Teleconferencing between County Health Departments and the State Emergency Management or CDC? How do they think these people connect to each other? I would think it would take a lot more detail of what kinds of traffic would be considered “emergency traffic” or “non-commerce” traffic.

    Bad Idea.
