Obviously curry.com doesn’t know what they’re taling about, and seems to know little about aviation. The radio altimeter on the Captain’s side was malfunctioning, reading “-8 feet” causing the autothrottles to go into the “retard” mode while the aircraft was still over 1500 feet AGL. The F/O continued to fly the approach with the autopilot engaged and tracking the ILS, but, having intercepted the G/S from above, the fact that the autothrottles were in “retard” mode (which they go into automatically at about 30 feet AGL on landing) was not intuitively evident, even though this was clearly displayed in the FMAs on both pilots PFDs. The autopilot continued to pitch the nose up as the aircraft tried to maintain the G/S, and, with the autothrottles in retard, the speed bled off until the aircraft went into stick shaker. Even then, had the F/O disengaged the autothrottles and autopilot simultaneously and firewalled the throttles, he may have recovered completely, or at the vary least, minimized the decent rate at which they hit the ground. Clearly, the pilots blew it big time on this one; here you had three pilots in the cockpit and none of them caught the fact that the speed was bleeding off well below Vapp, all the way down to 90 knots, at which time the stick shaker activated.
